English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course gives students opportunities to explore the big ideas of academic communication, interpretation of meaning through reference and analysis, and independent critical judgement and awareness. Students are encouraged to become independent, responsible and critical learners through a critical and evaluative approach. The course and its learning activities develop the students’ capacity to challenge ideas by examining academic texts from a wide variety of subject areas. In this way, students learn the skills associated with EAP in contexts relevant to their studies in other areas of the foundation program.

Assessments include:

  • A concise preparatory project
  • An academic presentation
  • Listening and reading exams
  • A full length research project
  • A viva exam based on the research project
